Seeing Clearly in the Fog

Foggy RoadMy usual route to work consists of a short fifteen minute commute from Layton to Ogden. This mornings commute however, looked a little different. There was a thick layer of fog all around my car, engulfing all my roadside familiarities. In fog that thick, you can only see a few yards in front of you. I proceeded down the path I travel every day with caution and I kept my eyes on the little yellow line by the side of my car that guided me down the road. Then, about ten minutes into my ride, something amazing happened. All of the sudden, I could see everything around me with precision. The fog lifted and everything became clear. I could now see the streets, cars, trees and other familiarities. But there was something different. For some reason, since I spent the last ten minutes in a dense fog, everything seemed crisp and beautiful. Every tree branch was clearly defined, and the sky was a majestic blue compared to the dark gray it was just moments ago.

I couldn’t help compare that moment to my relationship with God right now. I’m not going to lie, sometimes I feel like I am living in a fog….actually let me rephrase that, I ALWAYS feel like I am living in a fog. Most days I meander through this life, not really knowing what is in front of me. But every once in a while, I can see so clearly that I just stop and admire the amazing things God has done for me. I even like to think that in those moments, I see a glimpse of how God sees us, and He is giving us a view of His wonderful plan. Even if that clear patch doesn’t last for long, that moment is so defining that it sticks with me and carries me through the inevitable fog I am going to endure again in this life.

At those times when we are stuck in fog, and we can’t clearly see the path we are on, just like I had that little yellow line that guided me down the road, we have God giving us just what we need to stay on course. Sometimes that doesn’t feel like much, but He knows, that’s all we need.

“We don’t yet see things clearly. We’re squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it wont be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We’ll see it then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!” -1 Corinthians 13:12 (Message)

So, if you’re like me and your life seems a little foggy at times, find that little thing God is using to keep you on course. And if you feel you do have clear vision where God is leading you, follow Him, with all your heart. He will make your paths straight.
